The GX550 is no longer a future model. Here’s how three generations of Lexus GX compare for real-world off-road use. Figures below are stock, U.S.-market reference specifications; equipment and model year matter.

GX470 vs GX460 vs GX550: What changed?
The GX470 (2003–2009) and GX460 (2010–2023) use naturally aspirated V8 engines and full-time four-wheel drive. The GX550 (2024 onward) moves to a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6, a 10-speed automatic, and a larger GA-F body-on-frame platform. The GX550 Overtrail is the off-road-focused version, not a stand-in for every GX550 trim.

Specification methodology: GX470 approach/departure values represent 2003/2008 stock published figures (Edmunds); GX460 2010 values reflect Lexus preliminary product information and 2023 values reflect Edmunds. GX550 angles are Lexus’s published 2025 maxima, not guaranteed for every trim; 2025 Overtrail clearance reflects its factory suspension lift. Published angles are configuration-dependent. Historical breakover figures should be treated as approximate until confirmed from matching factory brochures. Off-road hardware: the important differences
GX470: Compact proportions and a durable V8 are its strengths. Its stock approach and departure geometry can be favorable, but age, rust, maintenance history and prior modifications now matter more than a spec-sheet victory.
GX460: Retains the V8 and a relatively compact wheelbase. Certain configurations add Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select and KDSS. Front bumper design and approach angle vary across the generation; do not compare an early GX460 to a later one as if they were identical.
GX550 Overtrail: Delivers substantially more torque, a factory rear locker, E-KDSS, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select and off-road camera views. The 2025 Overtrail’s factory one-inch lift raises quoted ground clearance to 9.84 inches. That hardware makes the Overtrail the most comprehensively equipped stock off-road GX here, although it is also wider and longer.
Which Lexus GX should you take overlanding?
- Value-minded build: GX470, if you find a clean, well-maintained example and budget for age-related repairs.
- V8 daily driver and trail rig: GX460, especially with the right off-road equipment and front-end clearance for your routes.
- Best stock trail technology: GX550 Overtrail or Overtrail+, with the rear locker and E-KDSS; verify trim and model year.
There is no universal winner. A well-prepared GX470 on suitable tires can outperform a poorly equipped newer GX on a specific trail. Tires, driver skill, recovery preparation, payload and condition all matter.
Used Lexus GX prices: October 2026 snapshot
These are advertised nationwide asking-price averages by model year, not transaction prices or a controlled apples-to-apples sample. Mileage, trim, condition, accident history and modifications can move prices significantly. The oldest GX470 market is too thin for a reliable generation-wide average, so use actual comparable listings rather than an invented number.
