Dos Rios RV Park – Overlander’s Review

Dos Rios RV Park Mason Texas
  • Texas RV park good for overland and off road enthusiasts
  • Located in Mason, Texas near Wolf Caves and Katemcy Rocks off road parks
  • More densely situated than another nearby option

Nestled along the Llano River in the Texas Hill Country is a quaint town known as Mason, Texas. With a thriving town square (including the rebuilding of the Mason County courthouse that burned several years ago) and two nearby off road parks (Wolf Caves Off Road Park and Katemcy Rocks) it is a common destination for Texas overlanders and off roaders.

If you are looking for camping or accommodations in Mason other than motel/hotel you may have come across Dos Rios RV Park. It is actually perched right above the Llano River with several campsites sitting atop a bluff overlooking an expansive river bed. The Llano is some 60 feet wide at this point flowing under a low bridge to the west before gradually turning southeasterly. An earthen ramp provides easy access for guests to access the river and cool off on hot Texas summer days. “Honor system” rentals of tubes, chairs and games and “for purchase” firewood is available at the RV park entrance.

At about 25 acres, the park isn’t huge but there are opportunities to spread out. Campsites 1 and 2 are prime riverfront tent and overland rig spots but you’ll have pedestrian traffic around you. Spots 1 through 6 in the RV park are setup for RVs with hookups but look directly onto the river, raised on a small perch midway up the bluff. Spots 31 through 39 are great tent or overland rig campsites overlooking the river, high on the bluff, nestled among cedar trees and likely to have a better breeze during the summer. A basic but clean bathhouse is located next to spot 31 so beware of potential noise during the night. Tent spots 3 through 8 are back off the river, also nestled among the cedar trees, and typically have room for one or two vehicles. Not all would have room for a roof top tent so check before reserving. Cabins and rental RVs are also available along the highway.

We camped at tent site 4 as it appeared to be the most secluded and distanced from other potential campers. It was a cold weekend when we arrived (temps dipping into the 20’s at night) which likely reduced demand. While our campsite was tucked into a pocket of several cedar trees, we could definitely see other nearby campsites. If they had been occupied we would have been obliged to wave and say hello because they’d be close enough to hear us. Dispersed camping area A through L backs up to tent spot 4 so it could potentially be pretty densely packed on popular weekends. Each campsite provides a nice rock fire pit, camping table, and bistro chairs and cafe table.

Dos Rios RV Park provided a good option for our weekend trip to Wolf Caves Off Road Park and I was thankful the cold weather scared off other campers. This is definitely not the kind of place where you’ll rarely see other campers since the campsites are located so close to one another. Oxford Ranch, located just south of Llano, provides a much more dispersed campsite feel with campsites hundreds of feet apart from each other in most cases. However, the facilities and river view are much nicer at Dos Rios RV Park. Location to your planned route or activities will likely determine your final choice – but both offer reasonable accommodations for overland and off road enthusiasts looking for a place to camp for the night. Enjoy!
