– Page Contains Affiliate Links – Why? (click here to expand) We lose money every month producing the TX:GX Overland website and YouTube channel. Creating content takes time and money – we have to pay for:
  • Website and WordPress hosting
  • Trip videos that cost money for fuel, admissions fees at parks/events, and wear and tear on our vehicle
  • An enormous amount of our time producing this site and the videos (I won’t even begin to calculate that cost!)
Basically, we lose money every month. We use affiliate links and YouTube monetization to try to reduce this monthly loss but they don’t pay much. We lose about $20 per month just from our website costs (not including trip costs). Purchases made via this website using affiliate links sometimes result in us making a small commission (usually 2-4%) that we use to keep the lights on. But since we lose about $20 per month (not including trip fees) you can see we are definitely not “in it for the money” – we do this out of a love for helping other people enjoy the outdoors and overlanding, to help people get started and find gear to make their trips more successful, and to produce videos that inspire and entertain our viewers. Even though we lose money each month, we are committed to helping the world we live in. Please read “Who Our Affiliate Links Benefit” to see a list of the causes and charitable organizations we donate to. Thank you for your understanding!
– Who Our Affiliate Links Benefit (click here to expand) TX:GX Overland is about experiencing the outdoors and doing so in a responsible, sustainable way. Without the trees, the forests, the clean babbling brooks and the open trails we enjoy while overlanding we simply couldn’t exist. Therefore, we are committed to helping organizations that support our outdoor adventures. Though we do not make a profit from the TX:GX Overland website or YouTube channel we still make donations to worthwhile causes. We make donations to the following organizations:
  • OneTreePlanted
  • Tread Lightly
We have reviewed these organizations and determined they fit our purpose. We do not have the resources to do an exhaustive background check of their prior/current activities, partnerships, board members, etc. so if they are “doing something bad” we’re not aware of it. We hope our donations to these organizations is doing the world some good – if you disagree with these choices we respect your decision, please respect ours.

ARB 4×4 5421110 Skid Plate Review and Installation

I recently got stuck… high sided out at Wolf Caves in Mason, Texas. It was bad! Check out my video. It took us a while to get unstuck but it reminded me that I need to go ahead and get some skid plates put on the GX. so I went ahead and used it as an excuse and picked up some skid plates and today we’re going to install them.

I picked up this set of ARB skid plates for the Lexus GX460. The model number is ARB5421110 and they go on all GX460 model years with KDSS. Of course you know who ARB is… they’ve been making amazing off-road and overland parts for decades.

ARB Skid Plates for Lexus GX

I got this set from the great folks at MetalTech.com who shipped it out immediately and it arrived in about seven days. Pretty cool! They carry a ton of great Lexus GX vehicle parts including the rock sliders I have. You can check out my video on those with this link. This particular set of skid plates is designed for overlanding and mild rock crawling. They are thinner than some skid plates but they also weigh a lot less. The total set weighs just 54 pounds and that helps me save gas and wear and tear on my daily driver. Plus it helps me keep my total weight down so I don’t exceed my gross vehicle weight rating. They’re made of metal and come powder coated in a light gray color. The product picture doesn’t show it but this is actually a four piece set providing protection from the radiator core all the way to the back of the transfer case. For the price it’s pretty hard to beat. I know some of you will say there are better skid plates on the market and you’re right. they also cost twice as much, weigh twice as much, and are way over engineered for my use. So i guess they’re not really better, they’re just made for a different application.

See video for installation of the ARB skid plates on a Lexus GX460.

Review of ARB Skid Plates for Lexus GX

I finally got it installed. The product feels really strong it feels very beefy. It’s heavy. I highly encourage you to use some kind of floor jack if you’re doing it by yourself or get a friend to help you. Overall I think they’re going to be a great skid plate. The fit is really good. They seem to be very stout, very stiff. I think they’re going to provide a lot of protection out on the trail but they are a bit of a pain in the butt to put in. hope you enjoyed this video hopefully it helps you if you decide to install the ARB skid plates.
