Midland MXT295 PRO: Is a Wireless GMRS Microphone Worth the Upgrade?

Midland MXT295 PRO GMRS radio with wireless microphone

Midland’s MXT295 PRO solves an annoyance familiar to anyone running a GMRS radio in a 4×4: the microphone cord hanging across the dashboard. Its wireless Bluetooth control mic and hideaway radio promise a cleaner installation. But at a listed $299.99, is it worth upgrading from the MXT275?

The short answer

For a new installation, the MXT295 PRO looks compelling. For owners of a working MXT275, the extra $100 buys convenience and additional features—not more transmit power. Both are rated at 15 watts.

What makes the MXT295 PRO different?

  • Wireless control mic: Factory-paired Bluetooth microphone, with Midland claiming up to 100 feet of separation from the radio.
  • Cleaner mounting: A compact hideaway base means less hardware competing for dashboard space.
  • IP67 rating: Midland rates the radio for dust and water protection, provided protective covers are properly fitted.
  • More connectivity: PA, wired intercom and compatible Bluetooth headset support.
  • Familiar GMRS fundamentals: 15-watt output, repeater channels and NOAA weather radio.

Why It Matters

Space around the shifter, center console and dash is valuable. Removing the coiled microphone cord can make a daily-driven trail rig feel less cluttered. The wireless microphone can also be useful when standing near the vehicle, though actual usable range will depend on conditions.

The tradeoffs

Wireless also means another battery to manage. Midland says the mic takes roughly four hours to charge and can last up to 2.5 days per charge. It does not automatically power off when the base radio is switched off. Apple Bluetooth accessories are not supported, and connecting a wired microphone disables Bluetooth mic operation.

What Owners Say

Early owner feedback points to the wireless microphone and flexible hideaway installation as the MXT295 PRO’s main attractions. Users also raise questions about programming convenience and whether 15-watt transmit power justifies the price for someone who already owns a capable GMRS radio.

Our take: This is primarily a convenience upgrade. The wireless microphone may make a meaningful difference in a crowded 4×4 cockpit, but buyers shouldn’t expect more transmit power than the MXT275.

Our verdict

Buying a new GMRS setup? The MXT295 PRO is worth a close look if a clean installation matters to you. Already have an MXT275? Keep it unless the wired mic is a daily frustration. The new model is a usability upgrade, not a transmit-power upgrade.
