Your Subaru Wilderness Just Got More Room for Adventure

Kayaks, bikes, camping gear and weekend escapes: Leitner’s new ACS ROOF platform gives Subaru Wilderness owners more ways to bring the gear that makes a trip memorable—without adding height above the factory roofline.

You bought a Subaru Wilderness because you wanted to go places. Maybe it’s a quiet lake two hours from home, a mountain-bike trail you’ve been meaning to ride, or a campsite where the pavement ends long before you arrive.

Then comes the packing.

The cooler goes in first. Then the tent, sleeping bags, camp chairs, cooking gear and everyone’s overnight bags. Suddenly, the vehicle that seemed perfectly sized for your adventures starts feeling a little crowded.

That’s where Leitner Designs’ new ACS ROOF platform comes in.

Developed with Subaru specialists Rally Innovations, the new rack turns the roof of an Outback Wilderness or Forester Wilderness into a more versatile place to carry adventure equipment. And unlike many conventional platform racks, it’s designed to sit within the factory roofline rather than adding another layer above it.

Take the kayak. Bring the bikes. Keep the cabin comfortable.

Imagine heading out for a weekend at the lake.

With the right compatible kayak carrier, the roof can become a place for your boat instead of forcing you to leave it behind or figure out a trailer. On another weekend, swap the setup for a compatible bike mount and head for the trails.

Going camping? A rooftop cargo box can move some of the smaller, bulky equipment out of the passenger compartment. That means more room for the dog, fewer bags piled against the windows, and less time rearranging everything at each stop.

The ACS ROOF uses adjustable load bars with dual T-slots, giving owners flexibility to position compatible accessories for different trips. It works with T-track accessories from brands including Thule, Rhino-Rack and Yakima, subject to mount compatibility.

The rack doesn’t include kayak or bike carriers. It’s the platform that lets you build a setup around the activities you actually enjoy.

A roof rack that doesn’t make your Subaru taller

Here’s one of the cleverest parts of the design.

Most roof platforms sit above the existing roof rails. Leitner’s new system fits between the factory rails, with the manufacturer claiming no increase in overall vehicle height.

That’s attractive if your Subaru spends Monday through Friday navigating parking garages and Saturday exploring forest roads.

You get more cargo-mounting flexibility without automatically making the vehicle taller just because you’ve installed the empty rack. Of course, a mounted kayak, cargo box or other accessory will still add height.

Built for the kind of roads Wilderness owners enjoy

Leitner and Rally Innovations didn’t develop this platform solely for suburban errands.

The system was tested during the Alcan 5000 Rally, an endurance event known for long distances and demanding road conditions. The companies report extensive testing over rough surfaces.

The aluminum rack weighs approximately 38 pounds and bolts to existing factory mounting points. Leitner estimates installation takes less than an hour using basic hand tools, without drilling or removing the headliner.

For someone who enjoys outfitting a vehicle at home before heading out on the weekend, that’s an appealing proposition.

The details worth knowing

The ACS ROOF is designed for the 2022–2025 Subaru Outback Wilderness and the 2026-and-newer Forester Wilderness, with model-specific versions.

Pricing starts at $1,560. The system supports Leitner’s GearPOD ROOF, a lockable, side-opening storage box sold separately.

There is one practical consideration before loading up: the rack’s advertised strength isn’t the same as your Subaru’s permitted roof load. Account for the rack, carriers and cargo together, and follow the applicable vehicle and mounting-system limits. Confirm kayak or bike carrier compatibility before purchasing.

That’s worth checking once when planning your setup—not making it the entire story.

Is it worth $1,560?

If your Subaru rarely carries anything beyond groceries and luggage, probably not.

But if your weekends regularly involve kayaks, bikes, camping equipment or longer trips with several passengers, the ACS ROOF offers something useful: flexibility.

It’s not about making your Subaru look more adventurous in a parking lot. It’s about making it easier to pack on Friday, leave early Saturday, and spend more time doing whatever brought you outdoors in the first place.

The best adventure gear isn’t necessarily the gear with the biggest specifications. It’s the gear that helps you get out and use your vehicle more often.
