Off Road Trail Maps, Guides and Books

Off road trail maps, guides and books are a great inspiration and resource for your next overlanding or camping adventure. They offer local knowledge of the best trails and provide tips and safety advice to ensure a fun and safe trip. We highly recommend purchasing physical books – using electronic versions is convenient but when batteries die or cell phone access is spartan they can fail. Also – we find it’s easier to plan routes using an actual, physical map laid out on the table! We use these trail guides on all our trips!

We lose money every month producing the TX:GX Overland website and YouTube channel. Creating content takes time and money – we have to pay for:

Website and WordPress hosting
Trip videos that cost money for fuel, admissions fees at parks/events, and wear and tear on our vehicle
An enormous amount of our time producing this site and the videos (I won’t even begin to calculate that cost!)

Basically, we lose money every month. We use affiliate links and YouTube monetization to try to reduce this monthly loss but they don’t pay much. We lose about $20 per month just from our website costs (not including trip costs). Purchases made via this website using affiliate links sometimes result in us making a small commission (usually 2-4%) that we use to keep the lights on. But since we lose about $20 per month (not including trip fees) you can see we are definitely not “in it for the money” – we do this out of a love for helping other people enjoy the outdoors and overlanding, to help people get started and find gear to make their trips more successful, and to produce videos that inspire and entertain our viewers. Even though we lose money each month, we are committed to helping the world we live in. TX:GX Overland is about experiencing the outdoors and doing so in a responsible, sustainable way. How We Use These Off Road Trail Maps:

Charles Wells “Guide to [State] Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive Trails” – These indispensable trail guides should be your “go to” if tackling any of the areas covered and planning to tackle tough, challenging trails. Each book features turn-by-turn mileage log with GPS waypoints. Trails are organized by general geography, then by trail difficulty. Trail descriptions include an overview, detailed rating, time/distance driven, highest elevation, contact phone numbers to call for trail conditions, best times to go and directions to the trailhead. We use this book to confirm which trails we want to drive, to make sure our vehicle is capable enough, and to identify points of interest along the way.

DeLorme “Atlas & Gazetteer – [State]” – These detailed map books provide indexed, full-color topographic maps with information on everything from interstates, highways and roads, cities and towns to historic sites, scenic drives, trailheads, boat ramps and even prime fishing spots. We use these maps to plan our general trip since they provide a much broader view than the trail specific maps mentioned above.
