2027 Lexus GX: What Actually Changed — and What Didn’t

2027 Lexus GX on rocky terrain

Lexus has officially announced the 2027 GX 550, and if you were waiting for a major update, a new powertrain or the long-rumored hybrid, you can stop holding your breath.

The 2027 GX is largely the same truck underneath.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The current GX is only a few years into its third generation, and Lexus apparently decided not to mess much with a formula that has already made the GX one of the more interesting luxury SUVs for people who occasionally prefer dirt to valet parking.

There are, however, a few changes worth knowing about.

What’s New for 2027?

The most broadly useful change is expanded SmartAccess. Keyless entry now works on all four passenger doors and the rear tailgate and is standard across every GX grade.

It’s hardly the stuff of an Overland Expo reveal, but anyone who has walked around a loaded GX trying to open a rear door or tailgate while carrying camping gear will probably appreciate it.

Lexus is also making ventilated second-row outboard seats standard on Luxury, Luxury+ and Overtrail+ models.

For Texas owners, we’ll happily classify ventilated rear seats as legitimate survival equipment.

Beyond those changes, Lexus says the GX largely carries over for 2027.

The GX Powertrain Doesn’t Change

Under the hood remains the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive.

The Overtrail and Overtrail+ remain the versions we’d watch most closely for adventure use, with equipment including an electronic locking rear differential, Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS), Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control.

Maximum towing capacity remains as high as 9,096 pounds, depending on configuration.

What About the Hybrid?

There isn’t one—at least not in Lexus’ 2027 GX announcement.

Despite speculation surrounding an eventual electrified GX powertrain, Lexus announced only the existing twin-turbo V6 for the U.S. 2027 lineup.

2027 Lexus GX Pricing

Trim2027 MSRP
GX 550 Premium$69,085
GX 550 Premium+$73,400
GX 550 Overtrail$76,730
GX 550 Luxury$81,600
GX 550 Overtrail+$85,010
GX 550 Luxury+$85,600

Prices include Lexus’ $1,550 delivery, processing and handling fee.

Compared with 2026 pricing, increases range from about $600 to $1,565, with the Overtrail+ receiving the largest increase.

What This Means for Overlanders

For existing GX 550 owners? Not much.

There is nothing in Lexus’ announcement that should have a 2024–2026 GX owner staring sadly out the window at his suddenly obsolete truck.

For someone shopping for a GX, however, the lack of substantial changes creates an interesting question. A remaining 2026 GX could potentially represent better value than an otherwise very similar 2027, particularly if dealers begin discounting outgoing inventory. That’s something TX:GX will be watching as 2027 models reach dealers.

For overlanders specifically, our attention remains on the Overtrail models. Lexus didn’t fundamentally change their capability for 2027—and frankly, it didn’t need to.

The bigger story may simply be that Lexus appears comfortable letting the GX be the GX for another year.

And considering how radically the vehicle changed when the GX 550 replaced the GX 460, a quiet model year might not be such a terrible thing.
