At Wolf Caves in Mason, Texas, our GX got high-centered. It took a while to get unstuck, and the experience sent us shopping for underbody armor. If you’ve ever heard the middle of your GX scrape as the front tires come off a ledge, you know why the shopping list starts underneath the truck.
Our take: The RCI transfer-case skid plate makes sense for a 2010–2023 Lexus GX 460 that regularly sees rocky trails and has a gap in its underbody protection. For a daily driver that mostly runs gravel to camp, keep the money for trips unless you’ve identified a specific clearance or protection problem.
What this plate protects
RCI’s GX 460 kit shields the transfer-case area, part of the exhaust and the nearby crossmember. The smooth underside gives a rock a surface to slide against. The detail that matters is how it mounts: RCI uses factory attachment points and a required steel support crossmember, so the plate doesn’t depend on the transfer-case housing alone for support.
It’s one piece of armor. If your front or fuel-tank protection is the weak spot, spend there first. And if you already have a full skid system, check what it covers before buying a second plate for the same spot.
Aluminum or steel?
Start with ¼-inch aluminum for a GX that commutes all week and occasionally takes a rocky line to camp. It’s the lighter plate material, which matters when you’re already carrying water, tools and camping gear. The support crossmember is still steel.
Choose 3/16-inch steel if rock ledges and repeated contact are part of your regular driving. The trade-off is added weight. If you’re building the whole underside at once, compare the weight of the complete system before deciding where steel earns its place.
Before you order
RCI calls this a no-drill, bolt-on kit, SKU GX460-10-TCASE. The product page lists the support crossmember as a required selection. Check the total with that part included and confirm how the plate will meet any skids you already run. Also check which plates you’ll need to remove for service. Those details matter more on a daily driver than an advertised install time.
If you need broader coverage, see our hands-on ARB skid plate installation and review. It’s a useful look at what a full kit adds and what installation actually takes on a GX 460.
The verdict
Buy the RCI if you can point to a gap under your GX and name the trails where it matters. Pick aluminum for mixed use and steel if scraping across rock is a regular part of the plan. If your current armor already covers the transfer case, put that money toward the next weak spot.
