Texas Overlanding: Routes, Camping & Weekend Trips

Find your next Texas escape: a quiet grasslands campsite, a river-road drive with a barbecue stop, or a canyon-country weekend. Choose a region below, then pick the adventure that fits your vehicle and the time you have.

Explore by region: North Texas · Hill Country · East Texas & Brazos Valley · West Texas & Big Bend · Panhandle · Gulf Coast & South Texas

You don’t need a finished overland build to get started. Pick an established campground or a suitable backroad close to home; save the technical trails for when your vehicle and experience are ready.

North Texas

A reason to take the scenic way: Carpenter’s Bluff Bridge, from our Eisenhower State Park trip.

LBJ Grasslands

Day trip or overnight · Backroads & dispersed camping
Trade the city for open country and a quieter evening outside Dallas–Fort Worth. Make this a gentle introduction to self-contained camping: a slow drive, an unhurried supper, and coffee outside. Choose a permitted camping spot and roads that suit your vehicle. Explore LBJ Grasslands →

Eisenhower State Park

Weekend · Established park camping
Make Lake Texoma the destination and give yourself permission to stay put. This is a camping-and-exploring weekend rather than a technical driving challenge. Our trip report pairs the park with a visit to Carpenter’s Bluff Bridge. Explore Eisenhower State Park →

Northwest OHV Park

Day trip · Dedicated off-road trails
Choose Bridgeport when you want the driving to be the main event. Pick a trail that matches your clearance and experience, practice with a friend, and leave the hardest obstacles for another visit. Explore Northwest OHV Park →

Make a food stop: Our Texas BBQ map includes North Texas favorites such as Hard Eight, Hurtado, and Hutchins. Choose a location along your drive rather than adding a cross-metroplex detour.

Texas Hill Country

Hill Country Overland Trail

Day trip or weekend · Scenic backroads
Llano-area roads, river views, and time to pull over: this is a trip to enjoy at a wandering pace. Our GX-and-Xterra outing includes river-country driving and an Oxford Ranch Campground stay. Choose sections around current crossing conditions rather than treating every river as part of the challenge. Explore Hill Country Overland Trail →

Dos Rios

Overnight or weekend · Campground base camp
If the best part of your weekend is settling in beside the river, start here. Make the campsite your anchor, explore during the day, and come back for a relaxed evening instead of packing up every morning. Explore Dos Rios →

Want more trail time? Hidden Falls near Marble Falls and Wolf Caves near Mason offer dedicated park driving. Their technical trails are a different proposition from the scenic roads above.

Landmarks & lunch: Pair a Llano-area drive with river views and Cooper’s barbecue. Southeast of Llano, Gruene Hall gives a separate Hill Country itinerary a historic music stop.

East Texas & the Brazos Valley

Cheeseburger Loop

Day trip · Mixed-road drive & a burger stop
A backroad outing with a good lunch at its heart. Explore the Sam Houston region at a comfortable pace, then work Yankee’s Tavern in Carlos into the day. Make Saturday feel like a trip without loading up for an expedition. Explore Cheeseburger Loop →

Texas 450 Loop

Weekend or longer · Piney Woods route
Choose this when you want more journey than lunch run. Link wooded backroads into a longer outing, or pick a section for a manageable weekend. Arrange the overnight around that section instead of squeezing the entire loop into two days. Explore Texas 450 Loop →

Huntsville State Park

Overnight or weekend · Park camping & lake time
Settle into an established campsite, take a walk by Lake Raven, and make room for something besides driving. This is a regional camping option, not an off-road vehicle park; use it as a base only when it fits your route. Explore Huntsville State Park →

West Texas & Big Bend

Big Bend backcountry roads

Full driving day or longer · Remote desert travel
Come for the space: desert roads, mountain horizons, and an outing that rewards slowing down. Our River Roads story introduces the remote driving. Bring suitable high-clearance 4WD for primitive routes; paved scenic drives offer another way to enjoy the park. Explore Big Bend backcountry roads →

Choose your overnight: Developed campgrounds such as Rio Grande Village and Cottonwood offer an established base. Designated primitive roadside campsites offer an isolated stay with a backcountry permit; they aren’t open dispersed camping.

Add a town stop: Leave time for Terlingua Ghost Town and a meal at the Starlight Theatre. Check current park conditions before choosing river-area sightseeing and driving stops.

The Panhandle

MERUS Adventure Park

Day visit or camping weekend · Private-park trails
The flat Panhandle gives way to canyon walls, rocky terrain, and places where you’ll stop just to look. Combine trail driving with camping for a fuller escape. Choose trails carefully: even an easier park rating deserves attention. Our MERUS planning tips help you prepare. Explore MERUS Adventure Park →

Prefer a scenic camping trip? Palo Duro Canyon State Park offers scenic road access, established camping, and hiking. The Lighthouse is a hiking destination there, not a vehicle trail. Finish an Amarillo-area itinerary with a steak at the Big Texan for a classic roadside stop.

Gulf Coast & South Texas

South Padre’s north-end beaches

Day trip or overnight · Beach driving & coastal camping
Trade trail dust for salt air. Spend the day exploring, fishing, or walking, then decide whether a permitted county-beach overnight suits your plan. Extended sand driving calls for high-clearance 4WD and attention to tides. For developed camping, consider Isla Blanca County Park. Explore South Padre’s north-end beaches →

On the way home: Add the Port Isabel Lighthouse and a seafood lunch in Port Isabel or South Padre Island. This trip is near Port Isabel, separate from Padre Island National Seashore near Corpus Christi.

Make the trip fit you

Pick one main adventure, an overnight if you want it, and a stop you’re looking forward to. Start with the trip checklist; add equipment as the routes demand it. Our portable compressor review and camp-water setup review cover two practical additions. The TX:GX GX460 build shows how a more developed setup comes together.

Before departure: Confirm current access, weather, camping availability, and required permits with the operator or land manager. Linked trip reports reflect their original visits; a saved route doesn’t establish current public access.
