Texas has many great campsites with varying geography and scenery. Whether you want to camp in the desert, the mountains or along a lake, Texas has plenty of options for you.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
This state park is located outside Canyon, Texas, and offers visitors a chance to hike or bike through some beautiful scenery. The canyon itself is one of the largest in North America, with a rim that rises up to 1,000 feet above the floor below. There are several hiking trails available at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, including trails through the canyon itself as well as up to the rim of the canyon. These trails range from easy walks to strenuous hikes that require some physical fitness on your part. There are also campsites available within the park where you can stay overnight if you prefer not to drive back home after your day trip into Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Camping is also available at private spots like Merus Adventure Park.
Canyon Lake State Park
Located southwest of San Antonio in Uvalde County, Canyon Lake State Park offers visitors a peaceful lake setting with plenty of camping facilities available if you want to stay overnight at this park. While there are no cabins available at Canyon Lake State Park, there are both tent sites and RV sites available for rent.
Big Bend National Park
Big Bend National Park is located in the Chihuahuan Desert, which is a part of the Sonoran Desert. It is home to many animals like armadillos, coyotes and javelinas. There are also plenty of birds such as golden eagles, hawks and roadrunners. The park also has plenty of vegetation like desert grasses, yuccas and mesquite trees. Campsites range from dispersed camping with no amenities, water or power to full RV hookups with power, sewer and bathhouse options.
Caprock Escarpment (Alpine) State Park
This park has a wide variety of plants including Texas sagebrush, yucca and prickly pear cactus. There are also many animals living here including mule deer, bobcats and mountain lions. Visitors can also hike through the park’s trails or go camping at one of its many campsites.
Colorado Bend State Park
Located near Austin, this state park has plenty of hiking trails as well as camping areas that are open year-round for both RVs and tents alike. While there are no hookups available at any of these sites, they do have water spigots available year-round so you won’t have to worry about getting thirsty while
Garner State Park
This park is located in northern Uvalde County and offers 9,200 acres of land along the Frio River. There are plenty of hiking trails as well as two fishing lakes on site. Camping is available at Frio Canyon Campground, which features 30 campsites and 25 cabins. The park also has two group campsites that can accommodate up to 150 people each.
Possum Kingdom Lake State Park
Possum Kingdom Lake State Park offers camping on both sides of Possum Kingdom Lake in Palo Pinto County near Graford. It’s home to several different types of wildlife including deer, raccoons and armadillos, but keep an eye out for snakes too! The park is open year-round with hiking trails available. Camping spots are available at for tents and RVs.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
The Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in western Texas near El Paso, Texas. It’s a beautiful place to visit year-round due to its high elevation (8200 feet). The high elevation means cooler temperatures during hot summer days, which makes it an excellent destination for camping in the summer months!
Davy Crocket National Forest
The Davy Crockett National Forest is located just west of Houston and offers canoeing, fishing and camping along several rivers and streams that run through its nearly 300,000 acres in three counties. The Angelina National Forest is located near Lufkin and includes more than 1 million acres as well as several lakes and rivers where fishing, swimming or boating are popular activities.
Sabine National Forest
The Sabine National Forest lies along the Louisiana border between Houston and Beaumont with over 600 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking. This forest also contains four developed campgrounds with electricity hookups available on a first come first served basis for $10 per night plus tax per site.
